"The Fall Dance has real crossover appeal; don’t think of it as a just a jazz record, but think of it as a great record. The playing is just superb . . . the lyrical flow of the music carries you effortlessly down a winding river of sound and exploration . . . A totally sublime experience,” wrote Echoes and Dust about Maria Chiara Argirò’s 2017 debut album.
Blending classical music and folk traditions with her own approach to harmony and melody, the compositions – written between Maria’s musical travels around Europe, Asia and America – call upon the sounds and aesthetics of contemporary jazz and the influence of figures such as John Taylor, Kenny Wheeler and Brad Melhdau.
An experienced band leader, composer, arranger, session musician and teacher, Italian-born, London-based Maria is an extremely talented pianist and composer with a real vision, performing music that transcends musical boundaries.
Maria’s material frequently evokes cinematic images with an unforced, emotional energy, taking the listener with her on her musical journey, with every piece feeling like a mini musical tome. With her subtly percussive, cinematically evocative ensemble - blending electronics, guitar, bass, sax, drums and vocals - she’s a quietly compelling presence in new European jazz.
The multi-faceted music has real depth and a broad emotional range, while Maria understands how to provide both direction and freedom to bring out the best in her musicians, who take her music to a rich and rewarding place.
Maria Chiara Argirò (Piano/Electric Piano/Synths), Sam Rapley (Tenor Saxophone/Clarinet), Tal Janes (Acoustic/Electric Guitar/Effects), Andrea Di Biase (Double Bass), Gaspar Sena (Drums).
"Brimming with imagination, and led by Argirò's artistic drive, the ardency of this sextet cannot be overstated – and The Fall Dance is certainly an album with staying power." - London Jazz News

"Rich in texture and unique in direction." - Echoes and Dust
"Full of passion, intrigue, subtlety and power, it was worth the admission fee alone." - Bebop Spoken Here
“. . . a player with impressive listening skills, responding to each soloist with well-timed, intelligent chord voicings and counter-melodies, together with an advanced and fluid soloing voice.” - Sussex Jazz Magazine
