Mediaeval Baebes *

This gig is for a seated audience

“If I could sing like you I wouldn’t be a punk” confesses ardent fan Iggy Pop on his recent Mediaeval Baebes BBC6 Xmas Day special….

Conceptualised in 1996 by musical director and composer Katharine Blake, the Mediaeval Baebes’ unique and other-worldly choral style, alongside the spirited earthiness of their performances, has enchanted audiences throughout many beguiling incarnations.

After 3 chart-topping classical albums, an Ivor Novello Award, numerous sell-out tours of the UK, USA, Europe and Asia and, most recently, 2 Emmy- Award nominations for their soundtrack to ITV’s hit period drama, Victoria, the Mediaeval Baebes have established themselves as one the most successful, female-led early music and folk ensembles in Europe.

With lush, ethereal harmonies transporting the listener through myriad ancient and forgotten languages, the choir weaves its story-telling magic through original settings of mediaeval texts, as well as reinventing traditional folk songs and carols, often accompanied by a dazzling array of exotic and period instruments.

2019 sees the release of the group’s 9th studio album, the fantastical A Pocket Full of Posies, celebrating the dark, surreal and mystical in all the well-known nursery rhymes, handed down through the mothers of the British Isles. To mark this release, this year’s 12 date UK winter concert tour will see the first visitations to these ancient songs, intermingled with numerous seasonal favourites.
