The Joe Allard Commission: Chris Redmond

The Joe Allard Commission: Chris Redmond

10th February 2019

The JOE ALLARD COMMISSION is the legacy of late Colchester Arts Centre board member Joe Allard, set up to continue his invaluable championing of the pursuit of vibrant new work across the art forms.

We are delighted to award the 2019 commission to Chris Redmond. Please join us for an afternoon of brand new work - admission is free.

Chris is a poet, musician and artistic director of Tongue Fu, one of the UK’s leading spoken word and music shows. Published by Burning Eye, he has been featured on Sky Arts, BBC Radio 1, 2 and 4. As a musician/composer he’s worked in theatre (Improbable, IceandFire) and TV (BBC One, ITV) and with Tongue Fu he has toured from London's Roundhouse to Dublin to Rio to Cape Town, collaborating with everyone from Soweto Kinch, to Kate Tempest and Roger McGough.

For this special show, Chris will be performing new solo work for the first time, exploring themes of memory, family and heredity through a mix of poetry, storytelling and song with an assortment of instruments (some home made) and a loop station. Sometimes he goes deep (ish). Other times he’s content to splash around happily in the shallows. Like a poetry narwhal, but skinnier and without the prongy bit.

‘…a wordsmith wizard whose sublime art of storytelling in verse is impossible to ignore”
The Poetry Book Society

“…reminiscent of the best bits of Kurt Vonnegut, discussing love, education, war and raising children…whilst at every second line making the reader howl with laughter.’
Exeunt Magazine

Doors open 1.30pm, show starts 2pm.
Free Admission.
