Picante

Drawing on Latin influences from artists such as Buena Vista Social Club, Sergio Mendes, Stan Getz/Astrid Gilberto, Spyro Gyra and the Gypsy Kings, Picante’s unique compositions incorporate Mambo, Salsa, Samba and Bossa Nova.

Renowned for his energetic, vibrant, passionate and charismatic performances on all four saxophones, Picante co-founder Derek Nash is at the forefront of the British jazz movement and is regarded as one of the most versatile saxophonists in the UK today.

A member of the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra and Ronnie Scott's Blues Explosion, he's the MD of jazz fusion octet Sax Appeal, funk/fusion band Protect the Beat and his Acoustic Quartet.

Derek's also performed with Don and Dave Grusin, Bob Dorough, Russell Ferrante and Nelson Rangell, while the other Picante co-founder, Dominic Ashworth, has toured and recorded with Carol Kidd, Michael Garrick and, more recently, Paul Jones.

We're dedicating the evening to the memory of master percussionist Robin Jones who, until his untimely death, was a member of Picante. He also performed here back in the day with his bands King Salsa and Latin Jazz Sextet, as well as accompanying visiting American artists.

Derek Nash (Saxophones), Dominic Ashworth (Guitar), Neil Angilley (Keyboards), Andy Staples (Bass), Marc Cecil (Drums), Satin Singh (Percussion).
