Darius Brubeck Quartet

A welcome return for jazz pianist and composer Darius Brubeck and his group, who earlier this year released their new CD, Live In Poland. Recorded during their highly successful tour of that country, the concerts celebrated the 60th anniversary of Dave Brubeck’s historic ambassadorial tour behind the Iron Curtain in 1958, which provided the inspiration for the 1959 hit Time Out.

Growing up in the artistic milieu of his famous father Dave, Darius has enjoyed a lifetime of varied international experience as a band leader, composer, teacher and broadcaster.

Upon graduating from university, Darius led his own groups, performed with artists  such as Don McLean and Larry Coryell, and in the 70s was ushered into the international jazz scene as a member of Two Generations of Brubeck and The New Brubeck Quartet (Dave, Darius, Chris and Dan) under his father’s leadership.

Throughout his life, Darius has been inspired by travel and the musical influences from many far-flung places: the beat of Brazil, the direct emotion of South African jazz, the improvisation and rhythm of Asian musics, and the lyricism and harmony of the European tradition.

Darius’ lyrical, yet emotive delivery is offset by his focused rhythmic incisiveness, which is very reminiscent of his father's devotion to exploring different time signatures and grooves spurred on with that classic 1959 LP, Time Out, which featured Blue Rondo a la Turk and, of course, the chart-topping classic, Take 5.

A quartet whose chemistry has to be seen live to be appreciated and who never fail to delight audiences, the DBQ play a mixture of standards, some of father Dave’s hits, South African jazz and originals, including new compositions from their recently released Live In Poland CD, recorded at Poland's Poznan Blue Note.
